Buying your new puppy
There are a few important things
to remember when wanting to buy a new puppy. The
first and most important is PATIENCE! You must take
the time to think things through and be absolutely
sure you are ready and prepared to give a pup a
life long home.
Research your breed of choice;
read all you can, talk to owners of this breed,
go to see a dog show or trial to see the breed in
action.
Find the right breeder for
you
Ask a veteranarian for references;
Talk to local shelters, they know who is good out
there;
Visit different kennels, they should be clean, the
dogs should be friendly and healthy and you should
be able to see the parents;
Breeding dogs should have health clearences related
to their breed ie: hips and elbows...
The parents and puppies should be registered;
The puppies should be tattooed and de-wormed (vaccination
can be done at eight weeks so that is not an issue
anymore);
The puppies should not leave the breeder's kennel
until they are at the very least seven weeks old,
preferable eight weeks old;
You should feel comfortable with the breeder, he/she
should be knowledgable on the breed and able to
answer all your questions.
Puppies should come with a written health garantee
and a detailed contract of adoption;
The breeder should have a 'no questions asked,
take back the puppy at any time' policy.
